I've found a new website to play with. Nymbler is a "personal naming assistant" based on name info from Laura Wattenberg, author of The Baby Name Wizard, one of my favorite baby name books.
Yeah, I have a collection of baby name books that all my expecting friends love to go through. I'm like a library that's always open! And my mom is so cute when I mention some baby name book, and she asks, "Is that a hint?" She really wants it to be one, but I've been collecting baby name books since I was a little girl because I'm fascinated by names and because they're always handy for naming characters in stories or role-playing games.
Anyway, I found Nymbler on Laura's blog - Baby Name Wizard Blog - and I think it's really cool. Type in a name that you like the style of, and Nymbler gives you a selection of names that are thought to be similar because of the sound or "feel" or the origins or the popularity. I don't agree that Brandy is similar to Farrah, but I do see that whole 70s connection, so I get it. (I just don't like it. LOL) I also get Shaun, Misty, and Sunny, and I think they have a similar 70s feel to them. Plus, Misty and Sunny have that whole hippie nature connection and end in the same sound as Brandy.
What names come up when you enter your own name or your favorite name? What do you think of them? And if this helps all those families in my neighborhood expecting their own bundles of joy, then even better. I'm having so much fun with this! I'll probably mention this again as I play with it more.
Tammy Lynn Michaels and Melissa Etheridge had twins a couple of weeks ago, and Tammy has written a beautiful post about why they chose the names they did for their babies.
A friend of mine emailed the link to me this morning, and something about it just really grabs my heart. I love hearing the stories behind names!
What's your middle name? Is there a story or history behind it?
I love this QotD! I'm having so much fun hearing all these name stories. My middle name doesn't really have a story behind it. My parents picked Suzanne because they liked the way it sounded with Brandy, and my mom really liked the name Brandy after the song "Brandy, You're A Fine Girl" came out in 1972. The other name that was in the running as my middle name was Michelle. Once they decided on Suzanne, their top name picks for a girl were Brandy Suzanne and Lindsey Grace, and when I was born, they both felt Brandy was the right choice. If I'd been a boy, I would have been Joshua Ryan to have the same initials as my dad, and that's the name they gave to my younger brother.
One of the forums I frequent has one of those rotating Petfinder ads on the main page, and it's just evil beyond words. I daily see 3-5 animals that need to live with me, but convincing Matt to have even one pet seems beyond my ability at the moment. (And honestly, he's right that circumstances aren't perfect, but by that logic, I'll never have a pet again, and that's just not right.)
Anyway, one of the sweeties who caught my eye today is this regal orange cat
. If you're near San Francisco, how can you resist his gorgeous face? If nothing else, please save him from the indignity of being called Sweet Yam. Poor guy.
I was surprised to hear that Gwyneth Paltrow has given birth already because it feels like she's been pregnant a small fraction of the time that Katie Holmes has been pregnant. Doesn't it seem like Katie has been pregnant for a lot longer than 9 months already? I guess it's because we've just heard more about her pregnancy. Gwyneth is probably very happy to have had Katie serve as a distraction in the media during this pregnancy.
From what I've read so far, Gwyneth and Chris named their baby boy Moses. I'm not a Coldplay fan, so I didn't know Chris had written a song for Gwyneth with that title, but even without that sweet association, I really like the name Moses. It's a classic name with a twist since it's not used very much now (at least not around me). I wonder if this will give the name a boost with prospective parents.
